Homework is worth 10% of the content grades in Reading, Writing, and Math. The purpose is for students to practice skills learned during class time. There's no denying that the more you practice something the better you get at it. I also believe it's important for parents to see what their children are learning in school. On average homework will take between 30- 45 minutes on a nightly basis Mon-Thurs. I realize there will be times when the homework is not completed for a variety of reasons. Your child can choose to complete it during a recess or lunch the following day.
Spelling: (Work needs to be completed in Word Work notebook and brought to class daily as it will be checked)
- Monday: Read words and notice what they look like and sound like. Sort into groups that share same
sound and spelling pattern.
- Tuesday: Sort and Write. Sort words like you did on Monday and then write them in their correct
categories into Word Work notebook.
- Wednesday: Word Hunt- find 10 words from your nightly reading that follow similar sound and spelling
patterns of your spelling words. Add to your Tuesday's sorted lists in your Word Work notebook.
- Thursday: Blind Sort. Have someone read the words aloud to you while you write them into their
similar spelling groups. Check to see if they are spelled correctly. Practice those that are incorrect to
prepare for tomorrow's spelling test in class.
Reading: Mon- Thurs- Read for 20 minutes anything of your choice. Record in Reading Log which needs
to be turned in on Friday.
Math: Practice problems related to week's classwork will be given on a regular basis.
